Bert was born in Dunedin.
He married Flora Cole (born at Victoria, Australia in 1878) at Foxton in 1898.
They had six sons & three daughters.
One son, Colin, & one son-in-law, Samuel Manson, served in WW2. One son died in infancy.
In 1896 Bert was the Manager, Creamery, in Levin. By 1905 he has moved to, firstly Tiakitahuna, then Rangiotu, then Te Rapa, then Whatawhata, as a farmer.
