Alexander was born in Aryshire, Scotland.
His family emigrated to Dunedin in 1856.
He married Jessie Urquhart (born in 1853) at Dunedin in 1876.
They had one son & one daughter.
Alexander was a butcher by trade.
When he died his widow moved to Levin to live with her spinster daughter. It was also close to her son who was at Waipukurau. When Jessie died she was buried in Levin. It is not known what the daughter did, however it was probably something like teaching as she moved to several places during her life.
