Alfred was born in Wellington.
He married Elizabeth Shailer (born in 1880) at Hokowhitu in 1902.
They had two sons and three daughters. Sadly both sons died in infancy.
Alfred started life as a farm labourer in Wainuiomata. He moved to Levin around 1896 as a bushman. In 1905 he was a butcher at Longburn and then set up business in 1911, with his brother Arthur, in Oxford, Levin as a butcher. They took over the butcher shop of Richard Butt which was two shops south of the Post office.
By 1928 he had moved to Waikanae Beach as a farmer where he eventually retired.
