Alfred was born in Clareville in the Wairarapa.
He married Louisa Hesketh (born in Kurow) in Featherston in 1910.
They had five children, the last three born in Levin.
Two sons & a son-in-law served in WW2. Alfred in the Medical Corp, Len in Divisional Signals & son-in-law Alan in the RNZAF on Pacific duty.
Alfred started out as a draper's assistant in Palmerston Nth & then a traveller based in Oxford St, Levin between 1911 & 1914.
He then set up his own drapery business (A W Allen Ltd), before retiring to Palmerston Nth around 1969.
Two sons, Alfred & Len and son-in-law John Lewington all worked in the business.
