Arthur was born in Wellington.
He never married.
He started workng life as a farm labourer in Wainuiomata. He moved to Waipawa as a labourer around 1900 and then to Wellington as a carpenter.
He then joined his brother, Alfred, in a butcher business in Oxford St, Levin, from 1911 to 1921. They took over the butcher shop of Richard Butt which was two shops south of the Post office.
He then moved to Waikanae as a farmer before retiring in Gollans Valley.
