Charles was born in Wellington.

He married Ellen Banks (born in Walsall, Staffordshire, England) in Wellington in 1884.

They had three children.

One son, William, served in the Royal Army Medical Corp in WW1. He went on to become the MP for Napier from 1928 to 1940 & was Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1936 to 1943.

Charles first shows on the Electoral Roll in 1885 as a watchmaker in Carterton.

By 1896 he is in Levin, 1905 in Foxton, then by 1911 in Te Aroha. In 1928 to 1938 he is recorded as being a settler in Helensville, Parnell & Remuera.
