Clarence was born at Christchurch.
He married Valerie Robertson (born in 1902) in 1935.
They had two sons.
Clarence was an engineer in Christchurch, then a manager in Wellington before becoming an Army Officer back in Christchurch around 1943. The family moved to Levin around 1949 where he became a Dominion Organiser.
In 1952 Valerie set up a travel agency called 'Fairfield Travel Management Ltd'. This was originally situated upstairs in the "Haswell Building" in Oxford St. Her son Jeremy along with Clive Nevill took over the business.
