Ernest was born at Christchurch.
He married Florence Hunt (born at Waimate in 1895) at Christchurch in 1926.
They had two sons. One son , Peter, was killed in a motor accident. At the time he owned P J Ward Motors Ltd.
Ernies started his working life as a farmer in Waipawa. He then became an Indent Agent in Christchurch. By 1928 he was a hotelkeeper at Methven, moving to Wellingotn by 1938.
He then became the hotelkkepper of the Levin Hotel around 1943 until he died.
His son Henry followed him into the business.
Five members of the extended family are bured in Levin.
