Ernest was born in Dorset, England.
He came to NZ in 1859 with his parents & some siblings.
He married Charlotte Wiber (born at Singapor in 1851) in 1880.
They had 5 sons & 2 daughters.
One son, Charles moved to Sth Africa & served for them in WW1. Another son, Francis, moved to England after marrying in Sth Africa. A daughter, isabella ended up in Zimbabwe. Another daughter, Helen got married in Sth Africa but moved back to NZ with her husband. One son, D'Oyly, served for NZ in Ww1
Ernest started out as a farmer in Otaki & Levin. By 1899 he was working as a clerk for the local Roads Bd. he then became a civil engineer in Raetihi before retiring to Tauranga, then Auckland.
