Ernest was born at Christchurch.
He married Amy Lancaster (born 1892 at Levin) in 1916 at Levin. She is the daughter of Ernest Lancaster who is commemorated with a "Walk of Fame" plaque.
They had one son & one daughter.
Ernest died quite young and Amy remarried in 1941 to Samuel Lumsden.
Ernest started out as a jeweller in Wellington before moving to start up a business in Levin around 1912 as a watchmaker & jeweller.
Around 1916 he became a farmer at Mokauiti, however he had to give this up due to ill health.
