George Vance SHANNON

George was born at Ulster Northern Ireland.

he arrived in New Zealand in 1865.

He married Emily Hewitt (born at County Wicklow, Ireland in 1841) at Nelson in 1865.

They had 8 daughters & 4 sons. Three died in infancy.

Two son-in-laws, Herbert Richardson & Archibald Leadbetter, served in WW1.

George started out in Nelson & then moved to Wellington as a merchant then became a Customs expert. He finally moved to Feilding as a farmer around 1914.

He was a director of the Wellingotn Manawatu Railway Co & the town of Shannon is named after him.
