Girthon was born in England.
He cam to NZ with his parents & siblings, in Sep 1900, arriving in Wellington on the "Tomoana".
He married Mary Twohill (born in 1871) in 1905.
They had two sons & two daughters, one of whom was born in Levin.
Girthon served in the Boer War & also WW1.
He started his working life as a draper in Wellington, then went farming. He was in Levin for at least two years, farming, before moving to Auckland, Waimauku, Wanganui & finally to Napier as a service station proprietor.
