He started at Waitara, then Maranui, the Marquis Hotel at Carterton, the Commercial Hotel at Pahiatua, the Denbigh Hotel in Feilding and the Grand Hotel in Levin by 1935. He was back at the Denbigh Hotel by 1938 eventually retiring in Feilding.
