Henry SUNLEY

Henry was born at Bathurst in Australia. He came to NZ around age 16.

He married Mary Knapman (born c 1874) at Gisborne in 1898.

They had 4 sons & 5 daughters. The 1st son died in infancy.

The other 3 sons all served in WW2 with Wilfred losing his life when his ship was torpedoed.

The other two are buried at Levin.

Three son-in-laws also served, Harold Crewe in WW1 & Arthur Kershaw & Ivan Craven in WW2.

Henry was a butcher by trade. He started in Gisborne & then moved to Longburn around 1905. He then tried farming, briefly, at Manakau before moving to Levin as a labourer around 1919. He moved to Ackland around 1931, first as a shopkeeper & then as a labourer.
