Herbert was born at Colchester, Essex, England.

He married Mabel Phillips (born at Christchurch in 1883) at Wellington in 1909.

They had two daughters & one son.

The son, Herbert Jnr was killed in action in France. He was a Flying Officer RNZAF, 97 Squadron RAF.

A son-in-law, William Tustin, also served in WW2.

Herbert started out as a salesman in Wellington. He was in Queen St, Levin as a Boot Shop proprietor from 1918-1919.

He then moved to Blenheim as a boot importer returning to Wellington by 1935 working for NZ Railways and then retiring to Raumati Beach.
