Herbert was born in Christchurch.
He married Martha Caygill (born in 1882) in 1911.
They had two sons & one daughter.
One son, Allott, served in the Air Force in WW2. The son-in-law Mervyn Cross was a Captain in WW2. He was awarded the Military Medal (MM).
Herbert was a teacher. He started at Palmerston Nth, spent several years at Foxton, then Lyttelton, finally retiring to Palmerston Nth. His 1st son was born at Foxton.
