It is not known where Hugh was born.
He married Emeline Phillips (born in 1868) at Napier in 1888.
They had three sons & three daughters.
One son, Hugh (Jnr) & two son-in-laws, Hubert Meadway & Walter Maskelyne served in WW1.
Hugh was a labourer in Clive in 1890. By 1896 he was a station manager at Tawataia before farming at Pahiatua & Mt Bruce between 1900 & 1911. At the same time Emeline was living at Weraroa.
