Jabez was born in Winehill, Staffordshire, England.
He came to NZ in 1913.
He started as a railway porter in Wellington before serving in WW1, having enlisted in Jan 1917.
He had worked at the Zealandia Hotel in Wellington where he met his future wife Frances Venn.
They had two children, both of whom died in infancy.
Jabez then became a hotel keeper in various hotels in the region, including the Grand Hotel in Levin, then Palmerston Nth, Wellington & Otaki at the Family Hotel.
From around 1946 he was a storeman in Wellington.
He was also a commissioned Lieutenant in the Home Guard during WW2.
