James was born at Petone.
He married Emily Taylor (born at Tawa Flats in 1850) at Petone in 1871.
They had 6 daughters & 4 sons.
Two sons, Thomas & Clarence, served in WW1.
James was a settler at Otaki till moving to Levin as a farmer around 1905. By 1911 he has moved to Hinuera, then Tirau, finally finishing up at Morrinsville.
Several members of the family owned property in Levin.
James signed the 1905 "Yes" petition for the new Levin township & was also included in the unofficial census in 1905, shown as a farmer, with four people in total & two buildings.
