James was born at Victoria, Australia.
He married Annie Kennedy (born in 1864) at Ahaura, West Coast in 1884.
They had four daughters & two sons. One daughter died at age 19, one at age 33 & one son at age 4. The other two daughters never married.
James was a clerk in Greymouth. Tragically he drowned on Christmas Day at age 53.
Annie became a hotelier at the Club Hotel in Greymouth. She moved to Otaki and ran the Railway Hotel. She then ran the Clyde Quay Hotel in Wellington then the Grand Hotel in Levin from Dec 1916 to Mar 1920. From there she went to the Central Hotel in Lower Hutt.
