He married Mary Ann Cook (born in London, England) in Taranaki in 1867.
James & Mary had 4 daughters & four sons. Two of the sons died in infancy.
One daughter was Harriet, a long time postmistress in Levin. A son, Louis is profiled separately.
James was a storekeeper in Hurangi in the early 1880's. However he died young (at age 36) so Mary Ann moved to Levin and set up shop in Queen St (northern side close to the corner of Queen & Oxford Sts). She also became the first postmistress for Levin.
Another son James took over the shop but also died young (aged 26). A daughter Minnie married Thomas Hudson who was an early land & estate agent in Levin.
