James was born in Pauatahanui.

He married Elizabeth Rutter (born in Islington, Middlesex, England) in 1894.

They had 2 sons & three daughters. One son died in his teens.

One son-in-law, Albert Williams served in WW2.

In the early 1890's James was a butcher at Pauatahanui & Shannon. By 1896 he was a settler in the Manakau area. By 1911 he was a storekeeper at Manakau. By 1919 he was farming at Pauatahanui.

His widow Elizabeth, retuned to live at Manakau where a son & daughter still lived.

James signed the "Yes" petition in the 1905 Levin township petition.
