John was born At Silverstream, Upper Hutt.
He married Mary Russell (born at Stokes Vly in 1876) in 1899 at Upper Hutt.
They had five daughters & three sons.All but the first three were born in Levin.
One son-in-law, Bill Trotter, was a well known agricultural contractor based in Roslyn Rd, Levin.
John started out as a farmers assistant in Upper Hutt. By 1905 he was a sharemilker at Waikanae. In 1906 to at least 1919 he was a farm labourer in Levin or Ihakara. He then went back to sharemilking at Waikanae and then back to Ihakara as a farmer by 1935.
