John was born at Dundee in Scotland.
He married Emma Neilsen (born in Denmark in 1848) at Masterton in 1877.
They had three daughters & one son.
He married for a 2nd time to Marcia Silvester in 1893.
John was a contractor in Helensville in 1890. He then became a shepherd at Fairlie.
During this time Emma was living in Wellington. She cam to Levin to open a dressmaking shop by 1908. In Aug 1910 she advertised a closing down sale & moved back to Wellington to live. At one stage in 1913 a house she owned, in Wellington, was burnt down.
