John Highman RUSSELL

John was born at Shaftesbury, in Dorset, England.

He married Mary Gilmour (Born at Palsley, Scotland in 1832) at Melbourne, Australia in 1858.

He had emigrated to Australia to go to the Ballarat goldfields. He then moved to Dunedin and took part in the gold rush at Gabriel's Gully. He then moved to mining on the West Coast . Then to Wellington in 1874. he was part of the defence force at Parihaka before moving to Levin in 1896 where he worked on the State farm. he was a plumber by trade.

John was on the 1905 unofficial census for the Levin borough petition, shown as a plumber with 2 people & 1 building.

They had 4 daughters & five sons. One of each was born in Australia, the rest in NZ.

One son, James, served in WW1 & WW2.

John & Mary are buried in Levin along with one daughter & son-in-law.
