John was born in Sherborne, Dorset, England.
He married Frances Robinson (born in Auckland) in 1877.
They had five children, four of whom survived into adulthood.
The first we find John in the Electoral Rolls is in 1905 where he a carter in Otahuhu, Auckland.
By 1911 he is in Manakau (just south of Levin) as a storekeeper. By 1928 he is a draper in Queen St Levin & in Palmerston Nth.
By 1935 he is back in Auckland as a storekeeper.
