John was born at Riwaka Valley near Nelson.

He married Mary Bell (born at Johnsonville in 1870) in 1888.

They had 8 daughters & 2 sons.

Two of the daughters died at ages 10 & 11.

One son, Charles, & one son-in-law, James Jamieson served in WW1.

John was on the unofficial census in 1905 for the levin borough petition.

In his obituary (Horowhenua Chronicle of 14 Aug 1935) he was a farmer, a Levin Borough Councillor from 1906 to 1909, a foundation member of the Horowhenua A & P Assn & Levin Racing Club, a member of the Levin Club & the Levin Bowling Club.
