John was born at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England.
He came to NZ in 1880, aged 22.
He married Kate Mahon (born at Victoria, Aus in c 1863) at Palmerston Nth in 1887.
They had 2 sons & a daughter.
Kate died in 1915 and he married Mabel Newell (born c 1875) in 1919.
Both sons served in WW1, Frank from NZ & Nevil from Australia.
John was a draper, starting in Wangnaui & then in Palmerston Nth from 1890. He also operated from Raetihi & Auckland before retiring back to Palmerston Nth.
He was part of a business in Oxford St,, Levin, from 1907 - 1910, called Watchorn & Stiles.
