Joseph was born at Broad Clyst, Devon, England.
He married Sarah Ackland (born at Broadhombury, Devon, England in 1850) at Honiton, Devon, England in 1868.
They had three sons.
One, Samuel, died shortly after a train accident where he was the driver.
Sarah died instantly, after a horse & cart accident in Levin.
Joseph married a 2nd time to Elizabeth Street, also born in Devon. He must have gone back to England to marry her.
Joseph started out as a bushman at Waimate in the early 1880's. By 1890he is at Ohau as a labourer, then became a platelayer. By 1905 he is a farmer in Ohau.
