Matthew was born at Killarney, Wicklow, Ireland.
He, and brothers James & John left England in 1863 arriving in Melbourne, Australia in Jun 1863. he moved from Austrlai to NZ, arriving at Bluff in Jul 1875.
He married Mary Ann Reardon or Riordan (born at Kerry, Ireland in 1851) at Blenheim in 1876.
They had five sons & three daughters all born at Tuamarina.
One son died at age four & another at 14 as a result of a shooting accident.
One son, Patrick & one son-in-law, Leslie Melville, served in WW1.
Matthew was listed as a bushman at Para (near Picton) in the early 1800's. In 1890 he is a labourer in Blenheim. From 1896 he is listed as a labourer in Levin.
