Matthew was born at Victoria, Australia.
He came to NZ in 1890 (aged 16) and married Lillie Ward (born at Christchurch in 1875) in Christchurch in 1898.
They had no children.
He started out as a waiter in Christchurch. He the became the licensee at Woodend & the Greytown.He then became the publican at the Levin Hotel, from 1911 to 1922.
He was listed as a settler thereafter.
He was a member of the Levin club, Levin Bowling club, Levin Racing club, Levin Golf club & the Levin Aero club.
He represented NZ at bowls in 1928 & 1931.
Both he & Lillie are buried in Levin.
