It is not known where Philip was born.
He married Bridget Heartready (born in 1859) in 1887.
They had four daughters.
Two of the son-in-laws (Arthur Bruck/Brooke and John Cornwall) served in WW1.
The first record of Philip's working life is as a labourer at Shannon.
For the next several years he was a road overseer in Levin. By 1908 he was in Nelson as a labourer.
By this time he and Bridget were living in separate towns.
