Richard was born in Lyttelton.

He married Esther Boulton (born at Pauatahanui in 1890) at Pauatahanui in 1890.

They had four children two boys & two girls.

One son, Richard Jnr, served with the Wellington Infantry in WW1.

From 1880 to 1890 Richard is listed as a farmer at Pauatahanui.

By 1896 he has his own butcher shop in Oxford St, Levin, two shops south of the Post Office. He sold this business to the Bulliman brothers in 1911 and went back to farming, in Levin.

Richard signed the "Yes" petition in the 1905 Levin township petition.
