Robert Cecil CHEESMAN
Robert was born in Nelson.
He married Helen Wirk (nee McGregor (born at New Plymouth in 1858) at Sanson in 1901.
Helen's 1st marriage had been to John Stewart in 1874. They had one daughter. He died in 1880. She then married James Wirk in 1881. They had six children.
Robert & Helen had two sons. In all Helen had nine children with three husbands.
Robert started out as a labourer in Martinborough in early 1890's. By 1896 he is at Pihautea as a flaxcutter. By 1905 he is a farmer in Palmerston Nth. He then is at Kaipaki & Raglan. Next is as a chef & restauranter in Cambridge & Hamilton. He eventually retires around 1946 to Te Awamutu then Rotorua.
In 1910 Helen is the manager of a private hotel On Oxford St, situated near where Countdown is today in Levin. (the building was owned by Mrs Ostler). Helen was in a partnership as Carmont & Cheesman. The Carmont was probably her daughter Rhoda who was married to Thomas Carmont. Helen also managed a boarding house in Queen St, Levin (advertised in the Chronicle in 1921).
