Robert was born at Middlesx in England.

He married Maud Richards (in 1879) in 1898.

The Richards family had emigrated to NZ in 1895.

They had two sons & five daughters. The first son died in infancy. The other son lived under the surname Howard-Taylor.

Robert started out as a clerk in Masterton. He them moved to Wellington as a masseur. By 1905 he was in Levin as a photographer, then Wellington before moving to Dunedin as a masseur, then Upper Hutt as a soldier, then Hastings as a masseur & then back to Lower Hutt to retire.

One son-in-law, Walter Spencer, served in WW1 & WW2. Two son-in-laws, James Hobson (MBE) & Percy Brant along with son William, served in WW2.
