Robert was born in Preston, Lancashire, England.

He married Martha Howard (born 1861 in Blenheim) in 1885.

They had three girls & one boy.

The son Robert Stanley served in WW1 as a Captain in the Royal Flying Corp.

A son-in-law Henry Gill died of his wounds in France in 1918.

Another son-in law, george Adams, also served in WW1

Robert started his business life as a draper in the early 1890's in Blenheim. He was then shown as a settler in Levin by 1905, then moved to Hamilton and finished up at Glen Massey as a storekeeper.

He signed the "Yes" petition in the 1905 Levin township petition.
