Sam was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, England.
He married Mary (born 1875 in Cumberland, England) at Otaki in 1894.
They had six children, four girls & two boys.
One son-in-law, George Gardner, served in WW1.
Sam started his working life as a carpenter at Rongotea. By 1900 he was in Levin/Ihakara as a farmer right up till he died.
He was a dairy company director for 46 years, including 34 as chairman.
Both he and Mary signed the "Yes" petition in the 1905 Levin township petition.
