Somerville was born at Dunedin.
He married Caroline McCarthy (born at Wellington in 1876) at Wellington in 1903.
They had four sons.
Two sons, Kenneth & Clarence, were killed within two days of each other in 1944. Both wre with the RNZAF.
Caroline died young. Somerville then remarried to Mabel Bevan (nee Edhouse).
Somerville started as a grocer in Wellington & then became a hotelkeeper at Ashhurst, Napier, Feilding & finally Plamerston Nth.
