Sydney was born at Tauherenikau in the Wairarapa.
He married Mary O'Connor (born in 1879) in 1899. They had two daughters & one son.
Mary died young and Sydney married Mabel Cragg (born at Picton in 1900) in 1935.
His son Sydney & son-in-law Henry both served in WW2. His daughter-in-law, Alys also served in the QM store in Wellington.
Sydney was a farmer, starting in Taranaki & then Eketahuna. He retired to live in Auckland.
He invested in the building known as the Haswell building on the west side of Oxford St, in 1918, finally selling to the Shaws (to become the Shaw's Building) in 1958.
