Thomas was born in Birmingham, England.
He married Ellen West (born in Palmerston Nth) in Wellington in 1894.
They had five children, one of whom died in infancy.
He started as a farmer at Rongotea, in the late 1890's & then became a stock buyer. By 1905 he was back to farming in Levin.
He then moved back to stock buying in Hawera, Patea & Matamata ending up up at Kihikihi by 1938.
