Walter was born at Oldham, Hampshire, England.
He never married.
He was the twin brother of Basil Gardener, the 1st Mayor of Levin.
In 1886 Walter was the telgraphist who brought the news of the Mt Tarwera eruption.
Around 1896 he was a labourer at Te Whiti, 1900 a tailor in Wellington & from 1905 he was a storeman in Levin.
He died quite young at age 44.
