Walter William SMITHSON
Walter was born at London. He came to NZ in 1867 with his uncle.
In some places he is shown as born in 1853. He is on the 1861 census as 3 years old which makes him born in 1858. However on his enlistment form of 1916 he states it as 26 Sep 1860.
He married Elizabeth Francis (born at Slough, Buckinghamshire in 1861) at Bulls in 1879, although not registered until 1917. She came to NZ with her father & siblings in 1869.
They had 6 children, 4 daughters & 2 sons. Three of them died in their childhood.
Walter had enlisted but was fit for home service only during WW1.
Walter started as a labourer and moved into being a baker in Levin. He tried being a grocer in Rangatau but came back to Levin as a butcher & then a storeman.
His obituary was published in the Horowhenua Chronicle on 10 Nov 1922.
her obituary was published in the Chronicle (Levin) on 18 Apr 1946.
Nine membersĀ of the extended family are buried n Levin.
