William Henry BIGNAL

William was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestshire, England.

He married Ellen Blackbee (born in Havelock) in Havelock in 1884. He was 36 and she was 18.

They had 11 children, 8 girls & 3 boys. Two of the girls died in infancy. All but two were born in Levin.

Two sons-in-laws served in WW1. One, Frank Merson, died of disease in Egypt in 1918.

William started out in the late 1880's in Kaituna as a bushman. By 1890 he was in Levin as a millhand.

When he died his widow remarried and lived the rest of her life as a Wood in Seddon St, Levin.

William signed the "Yes" petition in the 1905 Levin township petition.
