William Henry HIGGINS
William was born at Wanganui.
He married Elizabeth Wilson (born at Fairlie in 1881) at Wanganui in 1900.
They had two daughters.
He married Ida Burt (born at Featherston in 1898) at Featherston in 1921. They had no children.
Elizabeth married Charles Jackson (born at Jacksons Bay in 1887) at Blenheim in 1915. They had one daughter.
Elizabeth died of influenza five weeks after giving birth.
A son-in-law, Charles Smith served in both WW1 & WW2.
William started out as a jockey in the Wanganui region. He then moved as a settler to Feilding. By 1909 he is at Weraroa as the publican of the Weraroa Hotel. Elizabeth (reputedly kicked him out) took over as publican in 1910. The hotel was destroyed by fire in March 1912. It was rebuilt & reopened as the Grand Hotel in Sep 1912 with Elizabeth as the publican.
William went back to Wanganui as a horse trainer & then farmer.
