William was born in Bermondsey, Surrey, England.
His 1st marriage was to Emily Fox (born in Taita) in 1891.
They had one son & three daughters.
His 2nd marriage was to Dorothy Horton (nee Apperley) in 1937, just over a year after Emily died.
William tried his hand as a farmer in Taita in the early 1890's. By 1896 he was in Levin as a millhand. He was in Halcombe in 1919 as a sawmiller & then moved to Te Puke as a labourer by 1935.
William & Emily owned a section on the corner of Roosevelt & Winchester St from 1901 to 1911.
They were recorded on the unofficial census in 1905 as 5 people & 3 buildings which would suggest they had some sort of house on this section.
