William Samuel ALLAWAY

William was born in Reading, Berkshire, England.

He emigrated to NZ at the age of 18, in Nov 1874 on the "Lady Jocelyn".

He married Ellen (Agnes) Merson (born London, England) in Christchurch in 1878.

They had eight children (all born in Christchurch). The first two died very young. The third child was Ernest Ambrose who is recorded in his own profile.

Two sons (George & Charles) served in WW1, with Charles being wounded twice in France.

William worked as a wheelwright in Christchurch until moving to Levin in the late 1890's. He also worked as a carpenter & coachbuilder in Levin & Shannon until retiring.

He signed the "Yes" petition in the 1905 Levin township petition.
